Some women are born without the ability to mature and release eggs. In some, cases, women are born without eggs while others suffer from diseases such as Turner Syndrome and Gonadal Dysgenesis which cause absence of eggs. When women lack eggs, they turn to donors in a bid to start a family. Egg donation is not the same as surrogacy. Donors donate eggs which are carried in the uterus of another person.

Pre-screening for donation

An egg donor has to go through a series of medical and mental evaluations before they are approved for egg donation. Some of the medical evaluations that they have to undertake to include pelvic examination, hormone level blood tests, and ultrasound of ovaries, uterus and fallopian tubes. In addition, the donor has to undergo a psychological examination to determine their mental preparedness for the donation process. At the end of all these tests, and the donor has been approved, a legal contract is signed, and the donor accepts money for the donation.

Understanding the donation cycle

Egg donation cycles last between three to six weeks. The menstrual cycles of the donor and the recipient are regulated during this period to produce a parallel window when the egg can be removed from the donor and implanted into the receiver while maximizing the possibility of outcomes. To facilitate this, egg donors are given birth control pills to regulate the menstrual cycle and follicle stimulating hormones to increase the number of matured eggs. Besides, the donors have to attend physician appointments during the medication period for regular checkups.

Upon satisfaction that the window of opportunity is perfect and the follicles are mature, eggs are taken from the donor with the minimally invasive medical procedure under mild aesthetic. Later, eggs are removed and fertilized before doing implantation on the recipient. The donor will take a day or two to recover.
